Mopane! Acacia! Ebony! Tamarind!

Try sitting under the shade of a Mopane Tree and you won't have much shade! The Mopane leaves close up in the sun all the day! The leaves are shaped like butterflies. I have not seen a Mopane Tree but I might see one soon.

this is a picture we found on google images - it's the Mopane leaf

Mopane is the team of my 'house' at school. The teams are named for four trees: Mopane, Acacia, Tamarind, and Ebony. My tree is Mopane and the Mopane team is green.

Mom took this picture - I'm on my way to school. It's PE day so I wear my Mopane shirt. I bring my schoolwork every day in my homework schoolbag.

Elephants really like the mopane tree. The mopane worm lives on a mopane tree! People eat the mopane worm - they roast it! Some people don't eat bugs - and I don't! Maybe I will!

The Acacia nickname is the "nothing tree." Mommy brought me an acacia branch from an acacia tree - it has so much thorns, I don't know how a giraffe could eat that!

Acacia branch (There is a good story behind this photo...)

The Tamarind Tree grows in Africa and Asia and especially in Madagascar. Zaboo lives in Madagascar - ring tailed lemurs eat the leaves and seeds. The color of the wood is red.

The Ebony Tree is from India, not Zambia! The wood is black. Instruments like pianos and guitars, black piano keys are made from Ebony.

Hi, Owen. I think you're having a great time in Zambia. I had two women from Siberia staying at our house. Me and my mom really miss you, and we know we're going to see you at second grade. I hope i see you soon, and i wish i could come with you.

your friend, bijan

I was just thinking, Owen.... Wouldn't the Acacia tree thorns make some really great toothpicks for the giraffes?

And you look mighty snappy in your Mopane t-shirt.

Hi Owen,
Giraffes have long skinny tongues that fit between those sharp thorns; at least that is what I have read. Still, it does seem like a lot of work considering how tiny the leaves are. Did you tell your classmates that our team at Sanislo is the Goldfinches. The Mopane leaf is very pretty.

We miss you! Did you know that you now have your picture on a pen? When you left our house in Seattle with the little green suitcase, your mom took a picture - Harry on top (of course!), Me in the middle and you and your suitcase. I saw a pen in a store that you can open & put in a picture. So I did. My class of teachers thinks its cool. We love you.

Hi Owen,
Your story about the mopane tree is very interesting. Lynn and I got to try some roasted mopane worms when we were in Zimbabwe. They tasted okay and we didn't get sick. Your mom's story ( on Village Chicken)about Finny and the lions was pretty funny. That fence didn't look very strong that the lion had his nose up against! I think I would have been scared. Thank you for telling us about all of the wonderful things you and doing and seeing in Zambia. Love, Gwen and Lynn
