Seeing a wild cheetah for the first time!

I have seen real cheetahs in Africa.  They don't live in Seattle and they are not at the Woodland Park Zoo --yet!  The first cheetah I saw in a zoo in South Africa.  The surprise that I got there was the NOISE that they make.  They make a squeaking noise that they use to 'call' the other cheetahs. A cheetah does not growl or roar, it just says "eeekkk" Our camera didn't have any battery but it was very close and I got to take a little movie.

The next cheetah we saw was at Munda Wanga.  "Munda Wanga" means "my garden" and it is a wildlife park, sort of a zoo.  It is in Chilanga about 1/2 an hour drive from our house.  The picture above is from that park.  Mommy took it.  There are two cheetahs (we think) but there might be just one. The names are Zig and Zag because they run zig-zag to confuse their prey; they use their tails to steer zigging and zagging.

On Friday last week we went to Kafue National Park, named after the Kafue River.  We went to a place called Lufupa, named after the Lufupa River.  When we got there it was night time.  When we were driving to the campsite in the bush we saw a cheetah!  It was very close to our car - is was just standing there then it was walking away from us on the road then it just turned left and disappeared into the darkness.  Then we saw SIX lion cubs! That was the first time I have seen a cheetah in the wild!  I was VERY happy when I saw it because it's my favorite animal.

Finn, cracking himself up

Once upon a time there was a boy named Owen and he was made out of  cars and some letters and some bees and some computers.  His head was made out of cheetahs some cushions, some bednets, some horns, some brains and some walls.

When he walked down to stores he bumped into a pig pen.  He was crying and crying and he couldn’t find his mommy. So he went back home and then he still couldn’t find his mommy.  So he went out again for a walk. He was looking for the River Ocean-Floor-Ocean-Floor. (There were two names, that is the number two name.  The first name is Ocean-Ocean-Ocean-Floor River.)

At the walk he made a horn and he made a bednet and the bednet said “I can help you find this river.” He found the river by walking through the forest, drove his car, walked again and found a street.  He went across the street and came to the river.

He wanted to cross the river but he needed a shark to cross the river.

The shark just swam up to the side of the river where Owen was, and said

“Jump in my mouth and I will lead you there; no one will find you in the deep forest!”

Owen jumped in his mouth and they swam across the river.  He jumped out of the shark’s mouth and walked through the forest to find another cheetah to go onto his head.

The shark said “woo-hoo you lost the winners.” and the shark gave him a clap!

Owen went back home and his mom was at Seattle and he came back home to her.

I am Finny Peter Finch Jennings.  I am writing a story today.  First I want to tell that we had crepes today even we have had a picnic outside one day.  In this picture I am painting a buffalo on the wall in the garage.  It's called a carport.  In the carport we have bikes, daddy's bike, owen's bikes, mommy's bikes, a trailer from daddy's bike and some cars!  I get to ride in the trailer - people say hi when they see me in the trailer and they laugh and laugh and laugh.

I am painting a buffalo and I painted a warthog.  These are my favorite animals.  Owen is painting a cheetah chasing an impala. Owen's favorite animal is a cheetah.  My other favorite animal is a teeth dolphin.  The End.

Poisson Rouge

One day when I came home from school Finny was playing a game on the computer!  If you want to play the games go to:  www.poissonrouge.com
You will find LOTS and LOTS of games on it....you just have to explore and see what you can do.  I like to click on the submarine and then I play all the games on those pages.  When Finny and I play together we take turns because it's even fun to watch someone else play.

Poisson Rouge means "Fish Red" in french -- usually the description word (adjective) is after the noun (like a person name or place or a thing) so it really means "Red Fish."  You don't have to know french to do the games but if you want to do some french lessons, they are on the 'castle' games -- spanish, and english too!

Finny and I were painting on paper with paintbrushes this weekend.  We were using every color and we were mixing colors.  I have been making paper stencils by folding a piece of paper up and drawing a design and then cutting out the design (like how you cut out a snowflake design).  When you open the paper it is a beautiful shape and it looks like a spider a lot of times that I do it!  I had a whole bunch of stencil cutouts that we painted and glued onto the painted paper (even using Finny's papers). We put them on the matt with tacky, and mom and I put them into frames.  Don't they look nice?!  What do you think they look like?

Difference of Victoria Falls

It is June and a while ago we went to Livingstone. We went driving.  The drive was a little bit faster than last time when we went with Papa and Grandma and Nana in October 2008 because the road was better.  We saw the new road they are building and also most of the big potholes were filled.  The drive was about 6 hours and thirty minutes.
When we got there we were going to stay at Maramba River Lodge but we stayed at the Zambezi Sun instead; that way we could just walk to the falls instead of having to drive.  And so we DID walk to the falls.....but there was a difference!
This time if you wanted to cross the bridge you would get SOAKED and you could see lots and lots of mist going UP but not the water going DOWN.  You could see rainbows -- we saw two at the same time.   When we came in October it was dry and super hot.  It had not rained in Zambia since March -- in 8 months -- and the Zambezi River was not very full.
We did not take a lot of pictures because mom's camera would get wet.  Daddy broke a camera when he came to Livingstone once before we moved to Zambia.

Mutinondo Wilderness Camping

On Saturday we went to Mutinondo to camp.  We camped in a wilderness area.  When we got there it was night-time so we had to set up the camp in the dark and the rain.  Celia had gotten there before us so their tent was already set up.  When our tent was set up Mom got our sleeping bags and made our beds while we had dinner at their camp.  When we got in our beds, we found glow-in-the-dark bracelets around Cheetah.  Finny found a glow-in-the-dark bracelet around Meow! Eventually, we went to sleep.  In the morning the bracelets were STILL glowing!  When Finny and I woke up,  Finny and I sat by the fire.
Next, Daddy climbed up a mountain and he saw a beautiful view so he went down and called us to come and see the beautiful view.  Up there Daddy had to take some phone calls and we got to play on top of the mountain.  While we were up there I heard Finn say "OUCH!!!"  Daddy went to see what happened and he saw that Finn had been bitten by some ants because he was standing in an ant highway!  An ant highway is where lots of ants are marching; they are all usually going in the same direction and to the same place.  They were all girl ants because they were all workers.   We saw some soldier ants and they were way bigger than the other ants but they are girls too.  We measured the ant highway and we followed it for 17 regular daddy steps but the ant highway kept on going on through the grass for a long ways.

After that we went on a hike to the waterfall with Celia, Keith, Walter, Charles and Florence.  We had to jump across two rivers.  They were not very wide; they were skinny.  First we saw a big waterfall but the map said we should keep on going and then we'll get to see the river so that is what we did.   We got to play at the river.  Charles fell in the river and Walter was laughing! Charles pushed Walter in the river and Walter said "What was that for?!" Then Keith called Walter and told him something. Then he called Charles and told him something.  After that Walter found a termite mound.  He asked if he could break it and see what was inside.  Keith said yes so he started breaking it.  Then he stopped to let Anne take pictures.  Next Walter asked if he could break it more when everyone had had a look.
After they were finished, Walter started breaking it and I asked Keith if they could break it until we could see the queen.  We saw her and she was way bigger than the rest of the termites.  She was maybe one inch long and she was fat!  The other termites are as big as this letter i.
Walter, Keith and Celia (and maybe Charles and Florence) all tried a taste of a termite!  They said it tasted like dirt because there was dirt in their abdomens.  I didn't want to taste a termite.
In the afternoon at (16 hours) we went horseback riding. Finny didn't want to go horseback riding.  I went with Celia, Florence, Charles, Walter and Keith.  Walter rode Zebadi, Keith rode Spirit, Florence rode Zambooca, Charles rode Bushy, Celia rode Minstral and I rode Kite.  Florence and I had to have help riding; we had to have a groom leading our horses.
As the night fell, me and Daddy went for a mountain bike ride. We went where the horses went but then we kept on going.  We went until we saw two signs that said "Charlie's Rock" and "Sand Pit."  After that we turned around and went back to the camp.
When we came back we went to the other kids' camp and had dinner and we got to have another glow-in-the-dark bracelet.  After dinner we got to roast marshmallows over their fire.  I had four s'mores.  We went to bed with glow-in-the-dark bracelets.
On Monday I woke up and made a 'smoker stick' in the campfire.  When Finny woke up I couldn't make it any more because Daddy said I would set a bad example. Then we climbed the mountain again.  Mommy got to see the ant highway!  That highway stopped and most of the ants were going on a different highway but still the ants were going on it.  Then Dad found a chongalolo and he moved it with a stick so the ants would not attack it. (A chongalolo is like a millipede but bigger and with more legs).  Mom found a caterpillar that looked like a giant furry rat! It was about 5 inches long.
We went on our bikes again to where the horses went but this time we took a path that went into the bush.  We came across another road but there was a marsh over there so we took another path.  Next we met some people.  The first one had some marshmallows* in his hat and the other ones were cutting the grass.  We kept on going until we came to an airstrip where the horses were eating grass.  We saw a little house and decided to go that way.  We had to get off our bikes because there was a big dip;  we had to walk our bikes down the dip and through the tall grass. We kept walking our bikes for a while and then Daddy got on his bike.  I kept on walking until we got close to some people and then I got back on my bike.  We asked which way was the campsite and they told us.  We turned and soon we saw the stables and then we knew our way back.  When we got back I said, "That was a long bike ride!"  Then Daddy went to swim in the river.  We met Anne and Finny;  Anne kept going and Finny came along with us.  Finny showed us the river where to get in and I felt the water.  I didn't have my swimming suit but I went swimming naked because there were no rules!  There were no crocodiles or hippos either!  Daddy got in the water and Finny started scaring the fish.  I went in the water up to my neck but then I went deeper and I was pushing from the bottom and then swimming.  I got out and I didn't have a towel but Daddy shared his towel with me and I got my clothes back on.

I was running so I went back to the tent by myself.  I was faster than Finny and Daddy.  When I got to the tent Mom was there and later Finny and Daddy came.  I had a banana and then it was time to go horseback riding!   This time Finny wanted to go horseback riding.  This time Charles, Walter and Keith didn't ride, only Mommy, Daddy, Finny, Celia and Florence and I went.  I got to ride Bushy, Finny got to ride Zambooca, Mommy got to ride Kite, Daddy got to ride Spirit, Florence got to ride Zebadi and Celia got to ride Minstral.  Finny and Florence got to have a leader -- Florence got to have a leader because she was in the front.  Finny got to have a leader because he didn't know how to ride a horse.

We went the same path as the day before.  When the ride was finished I went back with Mommy, Daddy, Finny, Florence and Celia.  When we got back to the tent we had dinner:  grilled pork and pasta.  After that we had peaches for dessert.  I really liked the peaches and I got to have a lot!

Then we went to sleep -- in the morning we woke up and Keith came over for coffee.  The other family came and we had breakfast.  It was time to go.  Keith came back to Lusaka with us but his family went on to another place to camp.  Our drive home was 7 hours.  Mom said we did very well.

We went to our house and were happy to be back home even though we didn't have power or Daddy's truck!

*Actually that's not true!  The guy has mushrooms in his hat.  They were collecting them.  But it is funny to think of running into someone in the bush with marshmallows in their hat!

Me-ow!

One day when we went to Adventure City, there was surprise waiting at home. It was...CATS!!!
There were two black cats. The totally black one is mine and the one with a little white dot on his chest is Finny's. They came from Celia's house because they had 4 cats but now they have two and we have two. The cats are brothers. They are very playful but sometimes they start wrestling together. Their names are Ryon and Scorpius. Charles and Walter (Celia's oldest boys) picked the names but we liked the names so much that we decided to keep them.
Sometimes the kitties go out to hunt; they catch a lot of skinks. Once they caught a bird but it didn't die. A couple of days after the the day they caught the bird, my kitty tried to catch a skink. When a skink is trying to get away they can make their tail come off! If the tail comes off, the tail wiggles around and the skink can run away! The cat wasn't very interested in the tail wiggling around but we helped the skink get away by picking the cat up. WE were very interested in the tail wiggling around with no skink connected to it!

PS Mom just added the first photo...look closely at the background!

Owen channels ABBA

The other day I was busy doing something when I heard a familiar tune coming from the kids' room....they were singing ABBA's "Super Trouper" but these were their lyrics:
Supla-Fa, Supla-Fa
Likesy, pon-nee miney
Miney like the snow.
Hmmm mmmm, hmmmmm mmmmmm
Feeling like the 'nother one
but I just
Supla-Fa, Supla-fa
Likesy, pon-nee miney...
Here are the lyrics from ABBA -- I think I prefer owen's version, though not after he's repeated it a thousand times.
Tonight the
super trouper lights are gonna find me
Shining like the sun
(sup-p-per troup-p-per)
Smiling having fun
(sup-p-per troup-p-per)
Feeling like a number one.
tonight the
super trouper lights are gonna find me....
